Hyundai

South Korea

Hyundai has transformed from a budget brand into a serious competitor offering excellent value, long warranties, and increasingly stylish designs. Their 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is the best in the industry. However, engine recalls on the Theta II engines have been a significant blemish.

Common Hyundai Problems

Theta II Engine Failure

Critical
$0 – $6,000

The 2.0L and 2.4L Theta II engines in Sonata, Tucson, and Santa Fe are prone to catastrophic failure due to manufacturing debris left in the engine. Hyundai issued massive recalls and extended warranties.

Transmission Jerking (DCT)

Moderate
$0 – $3,000

Hyundai's 7-speed dual-clutch transmission in Tucson and Veloster exhibits jerking, hesitation, and rough shifts.

Years affected: 2012-2017

Maintenance Tips for Hyundai Owners

  • If you have a 2011-2019 Theta II engine, get the engine knock sensor software update installed. It's free and can save you from catastrophic failure.
  • Change oil every 5,000 miles on Theta II engines — not the 7,500 the manual says. Clean oil is your best protection.
  • Hyundai's warranty is excellent, but only if you have records of maintenance at recommended intervals. Keep every receipt.
  • The Smart Stream engines (2019+) are a significant improvement. The Theta II issues are not present in newer models.

Buying Advice for Hyundai

Hyundai offers incredible value — features that cost $10,000 extra on Japanese or European brands come standard on Hyundai. The 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is a huge advantage for new buyers. For used buyers, check if the Theta II engine recall has been completed and if the knock sensor software is installed. The 2020+ Sonata and Tucson are genuinely excellent vehicles. Avoid 2012-2017 Tucson models with the DCT transmission.
