How to Get a Second Opinion on a Car Repair

And When You Absolutely Should.

A second opinion costs nothing but time.

On a $2,000 repair, getting just one more quote could easily save you $400-$800. If a mechanic tries to pressure you into doing it "right now," that's your cue to leave. Do it every time.

Never agree to these major repairs without getting at least one other mechanic to look at the car:

  • Head gasket replacement (Often misdiagnosed, very expensive)
  • Transmission rebuild or replacement (A fluid flush or solenoid might be all it needs)
  • Timing chain replacement (Rarely needed unless catastrophic failure)
  • Catalytic converter (Usually fails because of another cheaper issue like a misfire)
  • AC compressor (Could just be a leak or a bad relay)
  • Complete suspension overhaul (Mechanics love to upsell "worn" struts)
  • Anything over $1,000
