Transmission fluid lubricates, cools, and cleans the internal components of your transmission. Whether automatic or manual, clean fluid at the correct level is essential for transmission longevity. Many modern transmissions are marketed as 'sealed for life' — this is a marketing claim, not an engineering truth.

Change every 30,000-60,000 miles depending on driving conditions. If you tow, change every 30,000 miles. Never wait for symptoms — by the time you feel shifting problems, internal damage has already begun.
German cars use ZF or DCT transmissions that require specific fluid types. ZF Lifeguard is the recommended fluid. 'Lifetime fill' is nonsense — change it every 40,000-60,000 miles.
Honda transmissions require Honda DW-1 ATF (for automatics). Do NOT use generic Dexron/Mercon ATF — it will cause shift quality issues and premature wear.
Nissan CVTs require NS-2 or NS-3 CVT fluid. Generic CVT fluid can cause shuddering and premature failure. Change every 30,000 miles.
Subaru CVTs need fluid changes every 25,000-30,000 miles — much sooner than the 60,000-mile recommendation. This dramatically extends CVT life.
