CV (Constant Velocity) axles transfer power from the transmission to the wheels while allowing for suspension travel and steering movement. They contain CV joints protected by rubber boots filled with grease.

Replace the axle if the CV joint is clicking (worn). If only the boot is torn but the joint is still quiet, you may be able to replace just the boot to save the joint.
Honda CV axles are generally long-lasting. Aftermarket complete axle assemblies are affordable ($60-$100 each) and work well.
Subaru AWD systems have 4 CV axles. Inner CV joints can develop a clunk when shifting due to the AWD system. Budget $200-$400 per axle.
Toyota CV axles are very reliable. When replacement is needed, OEM or Cardone remanufactured axles are recommended.
